United Way of Spoon River Country

Golf Ball Drop

The 7th annual Golf Ball Drop is right around the corner! Started in 2003 by, then Director Phillip Miller, this fundraiser is the single most successful for the United Way for Spoon River Country. In the past six years this event has raised $55,000 for the United Way and their partner agencies. It will be held on September 19th, 2009 at the Friendship Festival Fair grounds. Each year the grand prize is $1000 cash donated by Heartland Healthcare Center of Canton. There is always a great selection of prizes and many great sponsors each year as well. This is how it works: Individuals purchase raffle tickets prior to the event, either through the United Way, at our Partner Agency locations, and other specified businesses. Each raffle ticket number is written on a golf ball. Then, the Canton Fire Department raises all of the golf balls up in the air and drops them into pre-marked holes on the ground. The holes each have prizes assigned to them from $50-$1000 dollars in value. The golf ball which lands closest to or in the hole wins the prize assigned to that hole. Each year the event becomes more exciting and successful. Please continue to check back as more details on the prizes and locations to get your raffle tickets are released.

Trivia Bowl

The United Way has been busy this year planning and hosting trivia bowls. What is a trivia bowl you ask? It is a gathering of teams, out to have a fun and exciting night of trivia! It consists of ten rounds of ten questions each, ranging greatly. The categories and questions are the epitome of trivia. The United Way board works hard to find a vast gathering of useless information, pertinent current events, and the oh-so-relevant pop culture questions. The teams compete to answer as many as possible correctly, and the top three teams earn trophies, and bragging rights! The first trivia bowl was held at the Lewistown VFW in 2007, and we continued that tradition in March of 2009. The top team remained The Rocket Tap, of Lewistown, winning both trivia bowls. We have asked them compete in our upcoming bowl on June 12th at the Canton Elk’s Lodge. We will see if they will try their skills on the Canton teams, and just who will come out on top, this time? Also, in an effort to respond to the growing need for non-perishable food items to aid the local food pantry’s, the United Way is asking the community to come together and help stock the shelves. In conjunction with the trivia bowls in 2009, the United Way asked the teams and community to donate non-perishable food items, to be donated to the local food pantry. The Lewistown trivia bowl contestants responded to the ask, and came through with 175 items to be donated to the Lewistown United Methodist Church Food Pantry. The last trivia bowl planned for 2009 is in October and this will be held in Farmington. Specific date, time and location to be released soon.
